Continues to co-edit the Global Innovation Index with WIPO, lead the Portulans Institute, serve on corporate boards, and teach MBA and executive courses on AI strategy and digital transformation.
Led one of the world's premier business schools with a £150 million annual budget and globally ranked programmes. Championed AI readiness, digital leadership, and global innovation ecosystems. Held fellowship at Balliol College, Oxford.
Returned to research and teaching at Cornell while founding the Portulans Institute in Washington D.C. (2019) and serving as Chairman of the Global Business School Network Board of Directors (2018–present).
First dean of a top U.S. business school appointed from outside the United States. Led the historic integration of three Cornell business schools into the SC Johnson College of Business (2016), supported by a $150 million gift. Established Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island. Participated in President Obama's White House roundtable on workforce policy (2014). Elected Chairman of AACSB International Board (2017).
Joined as Assistant Professor of Information Systems and rose through multiple leadership roles: Dean of Technology & E-Learning, Dean of Executive Education, Dean of External Relations. Held the Roland Berger Chair in Business and Technology. Launched eLab for big data analytics (1999). Founded the Global Innovation Index (2007). Co-founded Fisheye Analytics (2008, acquired by WPP Group 2013). Visiting professor at Oxford Internet Institute, Judge School Cambridge, and Haas School Berkeley.
Worked as an engineer at General Electric in the U.S. and Schlumberger in Japan while completing graduate studies at UC Berkeley. Ph.D. dissertation on approximate reasoning with temporal and spatial concepts, supervised by Lotfi A. Zadeh.
